22 months

2 more months and our baby will be 2 years old! No longer a baby at all! Though he was certainly quite cute, I'm really not missing the baby years because the older Lucas gets, the more fun and expressive and wonderful he is! We really enjoy seeing him grow up into such a loving, silly, thoughtful, active, intelligent and adorable kid! When Lucas was 18 months old I stopped doing the monthly "state-of-the-baby" blog updates and instead moved on to bimonthly- wrongly thinking that he wouldn't be changing as quickly as he got older.
Here's the latest in LucasLand:

For one, he's singing- and mostly in tune! His repertoire includes the ABC song (his very first song), Old McDonald, Row Row Row Your Boat, Twinkle Twinkle (he sings it "tickle tickle little star"), and Seven Bridges Road by the Eagles :). And, not only does he sing the ABCs, he can sing it in the voice a horse would use (the singing kind of horse), the way a duck sings it, and, of course, the way a tiger would sing it (assuming the tiger knew the whole alphabet; I'm pretty sure they only know the letter Arrrrrrr!).

He also has become quite agile and at 20 months climbed the ladder to our loft. At 21 months he began climbing on jungle gyms and wobbly playground ladders. There's very little that can be safely put out of reach of his little hands these days. Luckily, he's been good about rules like not climbing on tables. :).

He has mastered a very accurate Cookie Monster impression, using the blue monster's voice and crazy mouth-cramming style whenever he gets little bite-size crackers and cookies (called Cook-ohs in LucasLanguage). Afterwards he smiles at us as his audience- quite the showman!

Lucas' vocabulary is growing so quickly that I wonder where he learns some of his new words. He's also talking about his morning experiences with Dada when he comes home from work- his speech is no longer limited to labeling objects. It's so cool! He's not yet articulate enough for strangers to understand him, but that is quickly improving. Another cool language/cognitive thing: Lucas loves applejuice and thinks that everyone should have their own personal bottle of it- even inanimate things apparently... when we were admiring our lawnmower out back one day, Lucas noticed the gas can, pointed at it, and asked, "Lawnmower applejuice?". Yes, Lucas, that's exactly right! :). Not only that, he'll drink anything, including vegetable juice, if we call it apple juice. We are going to keep up with that for as long as it takes for him to catch on!

As far as growth, we think Lucas is about to catch up a little bit with his peers since his eating has increased to quantities so huge that we get raised eyebrows at restaurants when we tell waitstaff that the loaded plate they're holding belongs in front of the baby. He's outgrown his 9-12 month size clothing and is now solidly in the 12-18 month category.

Favorites:
FOOD: mac n cheese, breakfast tacos, bacon, apples, cinnamon yogurt, pizza, fancy cheeses like aged raw milk cheddar and those with french names (!), nectarines, and pesto pasta.

TOYS: anything that has a motor in real life, water toys, ride-on toys, puzzles, Elmo things, play-dough, sidewalk chalk, and anything that has opening doors.

ACTIVITIES: being outdoors, dancing and singing, walking with Annie (while he's in the wagon), visiting with Sufyan, looking at and talking to wildlife or neighborhood cats, playing chase, and hide and seek.

Should have taken an intermediary shot here, but, oh well!

60 days STRAIGHT in the 100s!!!

We still have a month and half left of the miserably hot part of summertime. The temperature is regularly in the triple digits through the end of September and sometimes into the first week of October. So, we've been trying to get creative with staying cool, burning off toddler energy, and making it through the season with as little cabin fever as possible. Here are a few of our current favorites:

Playing at the mall: Escalators! balls! (he doesn't know these are GUMballs), fountains! And hide and seek/chase-the-baby in the luggage section of the department stores!

Riding the wagon while sitting in a tub of cold water:

Playing outdoor games while indoors:

Iceskating! This was Lucas' first time. We knew he wouldn't last long (5 min), but we really really wanted to get him out there because how cute is this??

Breakfast Picnic! (because it's way too hot to eat outdoors for any other meal)

A Beautiful Place

Lucas loves the peacocks, and I love the tranquil gardens and photographing my frolicking, smiley boy!

DEFINITELY no longer a baby...

Check out his playground skills! I've been looking forward to the day I could sit lazily on a bench while watching Lucas play instead of standing by, spotting him and making sure he didn't fall down a set of steep stairs or run across the bouncy bridge. Now our little baby boy has grown up and graduated to the big kid playground! :)

Haircut!

Well, Lucas' very FIRST haircut was actually just a trim. The hairdresser cut it in the same style as his baby hair- just a tad shorter. It was at a haircutting place that was just for kids with toys and cookies and other distractions. He did great.
Well, this time, I decided to bring him to a REAL barber. Though I admit it was mostly for the photo op... this place has been open since the 1930's and hasn't changed much since! I wanted to take pictures of everything in there- it was SO cool! Unfortunately, Lucas was introduced to the razor at the back of his head a little too abruptly and it was all over. Tears and trepidation ensued. The barber did the whole rest of the cut with just scissors and Lucas was nervous and sad the whole time- even as I fed him little pieces of Andies Candies while he sat in the chair. :)
His hair is a little shorter than I'd like, but at least he won't have long matted sweaty hair for the rest of the summer. I think it will look perfect in a couple of months. :)

Breakfast at Quack's

Ravyn and I often meet up in the mornings for some fun outdoor time with the boys before it gets too hot out. Quack's Bakery in Hyde Park was something a little different than usual (i.e. no playground) and Lucas and Sufyan quickly turned the sidewalk, doorways and bike racks into a play area (a little scary with the road so close). This is the beginning of a really great stage of childhood- everything can be made into a game or amusement at this age!

Arizona!

A few weeks ago we visited Meemom and Uncle Paul in Tucson. We had a really wonderful visit (not counting Lucas' resistance to sleeping) and Lucas was so showered with love, attention and toys that I felt like I had a nice break from mommy-ing. It was great having a slower life (I didn't have to run errands, cook meals, or really do anything!) and spending good time with everyone.
We got to meet Boris (a huge 120 pound St. Bernard mix) and Lucas was in LOVE. Boris was so tolerant and was totally fine with Lucas patting him, lying on him, and screeching around him. Most dogs understandably act pretty skittish when Lucas lets out his "I'm SO excited!" banshee squeal.

Lucas really enjoyed the storytimes with Meemom and her amazing skills at bringing his stuffed animals to life. It brought back such good memories for me from when MY stuffed animals sang and danced and talked; and I was SO entertained by it that I felt like I was a little kid again.

Lucas also enjoyed time with Uncle Paul. He warmed up to him almost instantly (though not surprisingly... Paul has a gift with babies) and when I couldn't get Lucas to sleep that first night, as soon as Paul came back from his parents' house I handed him over and Lucas fell asleep in his arms after 2 books.
One of Lucas' favorite pasttimes in the house was riding a wooden rocking horse my mom built years and years ago. See how much he loves this horse? :)

Thanks for a fantastic visit, Mom and Paul! Can't wait to see you again in December!
